Ethereum layer 2 zkEVM ‘Scroll’ confirms mainnet launch

Scroll, a new entrant in the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) space focused on scaling the blockchain, has officially launched its mainnet. The team behind Scroll made the announcement in an October 17 post, noting that existing applications and developer toolkits on Ethereum can now migrate to this new scaling solution.

A zkEVM solution like Scroll aims to reduce transaction costs and increase throughput for decentralized applications running on Ethereum. It achieves this by batching thousands of transactions off-chain into a single batch and then submitting a proof that contains a minimal data summary to Ethereum's mainnet.

Etherscan data indicates that Scroll's mainnet has been live since October 8, which was the date of the first smart contract deployment on the Scroll mainnet.

The Scroll team emphasized that the mainnet launch followed 15 months of rigorous testing and security audits across three separate testnets. Audits for Scroll's bridge and rollup contracts were conducted by OpenZeppelin and Zellic, while its zkEVM circuits were reviewed by Trail of Bits, Zellic, and Kalos.

During its testing phase across the three testnets, over 450,000 smart contracts were deployed, enabling more than 90 million transactions across 9 million blocks. Additionally, the firm generated 280,000 ZK-proofs.

Scroll's co-founder, Ye Zhang, mentioned a plan to launch with centralized features but eventually transition to a more decentralized model. Initially, the platform will have a centralized sequencer and a central approval button, with the intention to gradually decentralize over time. The team has a roadmap in place to address single points of failure and to incentivize the community to improve proving hardware.

Zhang stated that the Scroll team would propose various ideas for the community to discuss and determine the best path forward for Scroll's development.
